What Is the Tak Bat Devo Tradition?

“Tak Bat Devo” is a Buddhist festival celebrated the day after Wan Ok Phansa, one of the most important days in Thai and Lao Buddhism that marks the end of Vassa.
According to Buddhist legend, after spending three months in the Tavatimsa Heaven teaching his mother, the Buddha descended back to the human world at the end of the rainy retreat. It is believed that on that sacred day, the three realms — heaven, the human world, and hell — were briefly able to see one another. The Buddha is said to have returned via three celestial stairways made of gold, silver, and crystal.
As the Buddha descended, devotees gathered to welcome him and offer alms. This event became known as “Tak Bat Devorohana” later shortened to “Tak Bat Devo,” and has been commemorated annually ever since.

Every year, Wat Phra That Doi Saket hosts a Tak Bat Devo ceremony attended by hundreds, if not thousands, of people. The event is marked by deep spiritual devotion from both locals and visitors.
The procession begins early in the morning. A Buddha statue, beautifully decorated with flowers, leads the way on a cart or wagon. Behind it, monks and novices walk down the long staircase from the hilltop temple. Along the pathway, Buddhists sit or stand respectfully, offering alms with calmness, faith, and gratitude.
