Tak Bat Devo

At Wat Phra That Doi Saket

“Tak Bat Devo” is a Buddhist festival celebrated the day after Wan Ok Phansa (one of the most important days of the year in Thai and Lao Buddhism that signifies the end of Vassa). According to legend, the day after the end of Vassa was the day that the Buddha descended to Earth from heaven, down heaven’s stairs, to make all realms (heaven, human, and hell) able to briefly see each other. People then came to gather to welcome and offer alms to the Buddha (called “Tak Bat”). Today called “Tak Bat Devo” it commemorates that event and is celebrated across Thailand and many other Buddhist countries. There is a procession where a statue of the Buddha is placed on a car or cart at the front with monks’ alms’ bowls. The car or cart is driven slowly while monks walk in line in back. Buddhists will line up on the side of the road to wait to give alms to the monks.
